Tetrachloroethylene is an excellent\u00a0solvent<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0organic<\/a>\u00a0materials. Otherwise it is volatile, highly stable, and\u00a0nonflammable<\/a>. For these reasons, it is widely used in\u00a0dry cleaning<\/a>. It is also used to degrease metal parts in the\u00a0automotive<\/a>\u00a0and other metalworking industries, usually as a mixture with other chlorocarbons. It appears in a few consumer products including\u00a0paint strippers<\/a>\u00a0and spot removers.<\/p>\n

It is used in\u00a0neutrino detectors<\/a>\u00a0where a neutrino interacts with a neutron in the chlorine atom and converts it to a proton to form\u00a0argon<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

It has a sweet odor detectable by most people at a concentration of 1 part per million (1 ppm).<\/p>\n
