It is a light,\u00a0<a title=\"Volatility (chemistry)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volatility_(chemistry)\">volatile<\/a>, colorless,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Flammable\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flammable\">flammable<\/a>\u00a0liquid with a distinctive odor very similar to that of\u00a0<a title=\"Ethanol\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethanol\">ethanol<\/a>\u00a0(drinking alcohol).<sup id=\"cite_ref-ershdb_11-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0However, unlike ethanol, methanol is highly toxic and unfit for consumption. At room temperature, it is a\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Polar solvent\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polar_solvent\">polar liquid<\/a>. It is used as an\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Antifreeze (coolant)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antifreeze_(coolant)\">antifreeze<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Solvent\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solvent\">solvent<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Fuel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fuel\">fuel<\/a>, and as a\u00a0<a title=\"Denaturation (food)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Denaturation_(food)\">denaturant<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<a title=\"Ethanol\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethanol\">ethanol<\/a>. It is also used for producing\u00a0<a title=\"Biodiesel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biodiesel\">biodiesel<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a title=\"Transesterification\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transesterification\">transesterification<\/a>\u00a0reaction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Methanol is produced naturally in the\u00a0<a title=\"Anaerobic organism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anaerobic_organism\">anaerobic<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Metabolism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metabolism\">metabolism<\/a>\u00a0of many varieties of bacteria and is commonly present in small amounts in the environment. As a result, the atmosphere contains a small amount of methanol vapor. However, in only a few days, atmospheric methanol is\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Oxidized\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxidized\">oxidized<\/a>\u00a0by sunlight to produce carbon dioxide and water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Description:<\/strong><br \/>\nMethanol is the simplest monoatomic alcohol, a colorless toxic liquid, a contaminant. This is the first, simplest representative of the homological series of monatomic alcohols. The main consumers are manufacturers of formaldehyde, resins and other products based on it. Important properties of methanol are good solubility in water and low freezing point. Methanol is mixed in any ratio with water and most organic solvents.
