Styrene<\/strong>, also known as\u00a0ethenylbenzene<\/strong>,\u00a0vinylbenzene<\/strong>, and\u00a0phenylethene<\/strong>, is an\u00a0organic compound<\/a>\u00a0with the\u00a0chemical formula<\/a>\u00a0C6<\/sub>H5<\/sub>CH=CH2<\/sub>. This derivative of\u00a0benzene<\/a> is a colourless oily\u00a0liquid<\/a> that evaporates easily and has a sweet smell, although high concentrations have a less pleasant odour. Styrene is the precursor to\u00a0polystyrene<\/a>\u00a0and several copolymers.<\/p>\n

Application and use: <\/strong><\/p>\n

Styrene is used almost exclusively for the production of polymers. Numerous types of styrene-based polymers include polystyrene, polystyrene (expanded polystyrene), styrene-modified polyesters, ABS plastics (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) and SAN (styrene-acrylonitrile).<\/p>\n
