It is a common ingredient in formulations used for both industrial and consumer products. The triethanolamine neutralizes\u00a0<a title=\"Fatty acid\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fatty_acid\">fatty acids<\/a>, adjusts and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"PH buffer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PH_buffer\">buffers<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<a title=\"PH\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PH\">pH<\/a>, and solubilizes\u00a0<a title=\"Oil\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oil\">oils<\/a>\u00a0and other ingredients that are not completely\u00a0<a title=\"Solubility\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solubility\">soluble<\/a>\u00a0in water. Triethanolammonium salts in some cases are more soluble than salts of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Alkali metals\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alkali_metals\">alkali metals<\/a>\u00a0that might be used otherwise, and results in less alkaline products than would from using alkali metal hydroxides to form the salt. It facilitates the grinding process by preventing agglomeration and coating of the powder at the surface of balls and mill wall.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Triethanolamine#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"Cosmetics_and_medicine\" class=\"mw-headline\">Cosmetics and medicine<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Various\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ear infection\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ear_infection\">ear diseases and infections<\/a>\u00a0are treated with eardrops containing triethanolamine polypeptide oleate-condensate, such as Cerumenex in the United States. In pharmaceutics, triethanolamine is the active ingredient of some eardrops used to treat impacted\u00a0<a title=\"Earwax\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earwax\">earwax<\/a>. It also serves as a\u00a0<a title=\"PH\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PH\">pH<\/a>\u00a0balancer in many different cosmetic products, ranging from cleansing creams and milks,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Skin lotion\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skin_lotion\">skin lotions<\/a>, eye gels,\u00a0<a title=\"Moisturizer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moisturizer\">moisturizers<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Shampoo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shampoo\">shampoos<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Shaving foam\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shaving_foam\">shaving foams<\/a>, and so on. TEOA is a fairly strong base: a 1% solution has a pH of approximately 10, whereas the pH of skin is less than pH\u00a07, approximately 5.5\u22126.0.
